Pet of the Month

Simba was born on 29th October 2008 and went to the Rugby Cats Protection at 8 weeks old, and then in the same week came to live with us. It took him at least two minutes or maybe three, to check the house our and the other two cats (Fudge aged 16, she is deaf anf blind, and Kuching, who is 8 years old and was found under a hedge). Having done the checking out he settled in, demanding many cuddles!

He has the biggest feet you have ever seen as he has 6 toes on each paw. These are great for climbing trees and killing, as all cats do, small creatures in the fields.

He is a wonderfully placid kitten and loves to be where the action is. If either of us is on the computer he likes to sit on the desk and help out. His spelling is awful, but he is good at wiping out all the hard work that has been done!

In May we went on holiday leaving him to be cared for by friends. Very sdaly he was hit by a car. Onr of our friends found him in the house and took him into Rainsbrook vets where he had been before. twice we asked for him to be put to sleep but on the advice of the vets and nurses, we gave him a chance. After two days in the hospital he was well enough to be operated on. he had to lose most of his tail and one back leg. Amazingly he was well enough to come home the next day! Within hours he was climbing up and down the stairs, eating and demanding his cuddles. he is still wobbly, but has worked out how to lean on the wall to wash himself without falling over. He is now tunning on 3 legs, but at first, he did have to hop like a rabbit!

We cannot decide if he is a lucky or unlucky kitten due to his unfortunate accident, or how well he has recovered, but we do know he only has a few of his 9 lives left! He lost one when he was hit by the car, and two when we wanted to put him to sleep.

Without the kindness and expert work of the vets and nurses, he would not be here today to have his stitches out, and return to a near normal life.

We cannot say thank you enough to everyone involved with his care.

Love from Simba's Mum & Dad and Big Hugs from Simba

NOTE FROM THE NURSES:

Simba was admitted to the surgery by Helena Kadow, on eo fthe vets, to intially put on fluids, give pain relieg and take x-rays as he had been hit by a car. His right hind leg was badly fractured and on x-rays it was found that his tail was also fractured very high up near his back. Although he had the very bad fractures, Simba was extremely loving an comfortable while hospitalised with is - in fact he spent most of the day rolling around in his kennel, showing his belly, and purring very loudly! CUDDLES!

For this reason, we all became very attached to him very quickly and so felt it our duty to advice Simba's owner of all the options available. After two days hospitalisation, Helena decided it was time to operate on Simba to remove his fractured leg and tail. So between them Becky (Head Nurse) and Helena prepared Simba for surgery and monitored him closely during the anaesthetic.

The surgery went well and he had a speedy recovery from the anaesthetic. That afternoon, Elaine (Auxially Nurse) and Becky let Simba into the preparation room in the hospital to exercie a bit - however, they were not expecting him to jump up onto the stools and tables after such extensive surgery!

This just goes to prove how well cats cope on three legs - never underestimate a cats ability!!

Simba was allowed to go home the day after the surgery and we're sure his owners are very pleased to have him back in almost one piece....

Cats have an amazing ability to cope very well with the loss of a limb and it in no way slows them down or limits them in any way, their ability to adapt is second to none!

Simba is a prime example of how three legged cats can live life to the full!

All the nurses and vets who cared for Simba are extremely pleased he made a full recovery and is doing so well!
