Pet of the Month

This is our cat Oscar. He is about two and a half years old but we are not sure as he was a stray who adopted us through the Cats Protection! He came to live with us and our daughter harriet, in November last year.

Oscar very quicklysettled in to our home but hated being kept inside for the first few weeks. He was much happier once he was allowed to go outside but on his first day out was trapped for nearly an hour in a tree where he had been chased by the enighbours dog, Eddy! Nowadays, Oscar torments Eddy by sitting on our garage roof just out of reach - clever boy!

Oscar is a real outdoor cat and is very fast and a good climber. He loces getting lots of fuss and attention and likes to sit next to you on the sofa but isn't a lap cat. He is sociable and will always come to investigate if we have visitors and say hello. He knows he is not allowed in our bedroom but often carries out commando raids when he thinks we are not looking and hides behind the curtains. His incredibly loud purring gives him away though! He also like to lie in wait on ht elanding and attack you through the bannisters! But he is always gentle and never uses his claws when playing,

Oscar is always very curious and likes to investigate new places, including small spaces. He is particularly fascinated by the cupbaord under the stairs. Recently OScar went missing and we only found him beacuse Harriet heard a faint miaow coming from the garden. He had wandered into a garden shed and had been locked in for a day!

Last week Oscar came home makeing lots of noise, which is not unusual for him as he can be very vocal, however, this time was different. He had been involved in some sort of car accident. His back was badly burnt with lots of fur missing and his paws were in a terrible state. He received fantastic treatment from Mr Daniel and the team at the surgery where he had to stay for 3 days. He needed to have a toe amputated and his paws held to be held together with stitches and staples. He might need to have further surgery. He is obviously in a lot of discomfort but he is incredibly patient and just keeps purring and accepting treatment. It is going to be a long time before he will be fit enough to annoy the dog next door again, but we are all sure he will be back up on ht egarage roof soon!

Many thanks to all for their expert care and support!

Note from the Nurses

Oscar was admitted to the hospital following a collision with a vehicle. He managed to get home afterwards which allowed his owners to find him and bring him striaght to teh surgery.

He was seen initially by Mr Daniel who admitted him for stabilisation with fluids and pain relief, and was given treatment by Helena Kadow, another of our veterinary surgeons. X-rays were taken of Oscar to determine if he had any internal injuries which could not be seen on examination. Fortunately Oscar managed to avoid getting any internal injuries, which was very lucky considering what he had been through. We had to give Oscar a general anaesthitic as he was so uncomfortable to assess the extent of  his wounds. All four of Oscar's Feet were badly hurt and he had extensive burns across his back which we suspoected was from a vehilce exhaust.

Honey dressings were applied to all of Oscar's wounds to promote healing. These were initially changed daily and he was given regular pain reielf. Oscare to hospitalised to 3 days and then it was decided he could go home with cage rest and to come back every few days for dressing changes and to assess the wounds.

We are very pleased that Oscar's legs have healed remarkably well and his back is continuing to improve on every visit.

He is such a lovely, placid cat that we have had no problems changing his dressing swhen he comes in to the hospital and through his treatment he has continued to purr loudly and accept fuss and crave attention from us all!

We hope Oscar continues to do so well and hope to see him back to full health soon!
